3D-printed flow system for determination of lead in natural waters ArchiMer
Mattio, Elodie; Robert-peillard, Fabien; Branger, Catherine; Puzio, Kinga; Margaillan, Andre; Brach-papa, Christophe; Knoery, Joel; Boudenne, Jean-luc; Coulomb, Bruno.
The development of 3D printing in recent years opens up a vast array of possibilities in the field of flow analysis. In the present study, a new 3D-printed flow system has been developed for the selective spectrophotometric determination of lead in natural waters. This system was composed of three 3D-printed units (sample treatment, mixing coil and detection) that might have been assembled without any tubing to form a complete flow system. Lead was determined in a two-step procedure. A preconcentration of lead was first carried out on TrisKem Pb Resin located in a 3D-printed column reservoir closed by a tapped screw. This resin showed a high extraction selectivity for lead over many tested potential interfering metals. In a second step, lead was eluted by...

3D-printed lab-on-valve for fluorescent determination of cadmium and lead in water ArchiMer
Mattio, Elodie; Robert-peillard, Fabien; Vassalo, Laurent; Branger, Catherine; Margaillan, Andre; Brach-papa, Christophe; Knoery, Joel; Boudenne, Jean-luc; Coulomb, Bruno.
In recent years, the development of 3D printing in flow analysis has allowed the creation of new systems with various applications. Up to now, 3D printing was mainly used for the manufacture of small units such as flow detection cells, preconcentration units or mixing systems. In the present study, a new 3D printed lab-on-valve system was developed to selectively quantify lead and cadmium in water. Different technologies were compared for lab-on-valve 3D printing. Printed test units have shown that stereolithography or digital light processing are satisfactory techniques for creating complex lab-on-valve units. The lab-on-valve system was composed of two columns, eight peripheral ports and a central port, and a coil integrating baffles to increase mixing...

A French environmental specimen bank of marine bivalves : archive of trace chemical contamination ArchiMer
Claisse, Didier; Knoery, Joel.
Since 1979, the French Marine Monitoring network (RNO) has been regularly collecting blue mussels and oysters at some 100 characterized sites along the French shore. The bivalves are used as quantitative bio-indicators of coastal chemical contamination. Since 1981, the collected samples have been stabilized and archived in a sample bank. The sample collection is thus a continuously lengthening record of coastal contamination. Bivalves are collected by the Ifremer coastal laboratories. In order to eliminate their faeces and pseudofaeces, molluscs are depurated for 24 hours in decanted sea water from the sampling area. They are then sized, shucked from their shell and frozen in pools of 20-50 animals. At the Dépt of Biogeochemistry and Ecotoxicology, the...

Assessment of the metal contamination evolution in the Loire estuary using Cu and Zn stable isotopes and geochemical data in sediments ArchiMer
Ferreira Araujo, Daniel; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Briant, Nicolas; Knoery, Joel; Sireau, Teddy; Mojtahid, Meryem; Metzger, Edouard; Brach-papa, Christophe.
In this work, a multi-elemental approach combining Cu and Zn stable isotopes is used to assess the metal contamination evolution in the Loire estuary bulk sediments. Elemental geochemical data indicate an increase of metal concentrations from the beginning of the industrial period peaking in the 1990s, followed by an attenuation of metal contamination inputs to the estuary. Zinc isotope compositions suggest a binary mixing process between Zn derived from terrigenous material and multi-urban anthropogenic sources. Copper isotope systematics indicate a single natural dominant source represented by weathered silicate particles from soils and rocks. This work demonstrates the applicability of Zn isotopes to identify anthropogenic Zn sources in coastal systems,...

Long-term monitoring of data of ambient mercury (Hg) on a global scale to assess its emission, transport, atmospheric chemistry, and deposition processes is vital to understanding the impact of Hg pollution on the environment. The Global Mercury Observation System (GMOS) project was funded by the European Commission (http://www.gmos.eu) and started in November 2010 with the overall goal to develop a coordinated global observing system to monitor Hg on a global scale, including a large network of ground-based monitoring stations, ad hoc periodic oceanographic cruises and measurement flights in the lower and upper troposphere as well as in the lower stratosphere. To date, more than 40 ground-based monitoring sites constitute the global network covering many...

Biomonitoring along the french coastline: could mercury isotopic composition indicate a temporal change in hg reaching the coastal zone? ArchiMer
Briant, Nicolas; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Brach-papa, Christophe; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Savoye, Nicolas; Sonke, Jeroen; Knoery, Joel.
Mercury (Hg) is a natural element toxic to all living organisms. Its ocean biogeochemical cycle is dominated by atmospheric deposition, which human activities contribute to disrupt signi cantly, and to a lesser extent by riverine discharge. This element is bioamplifed and bioaccumulated in marine food webs. since mercury concentrations in some coastal animal species of high trophic level approach sanitary thresholds, understanding biogeochemical processes and mechanisms leading to these elevated Hg concentrations becomes important. The stable isotopic geochemistry of metal is indeed a very promising way to trace processes and transfers from one mercury biogeochemical reservoir to another (Sonke and Blum, 2013). The stable isotopes of Hg undergo...

Chemical contaminants (trace metals, persistent organic pollutants) in albacore tuna from western Indian and south-eastern Atlantic Oceans: Trophic influence and potential as tracers of populations ArchiMer
Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Brach-papa, Christophe; Auger, Dominique; Bodin, Nathalie; Bruzac, Sandrine; Crochet, Sylvette; Degroote, Maxime; Hollanda, Stephanie J.; Hubert, Clarisse; Knoery, Joel; Munschy, Catherine; Puech, Alexis; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Thomas, Bastien; West, Wendy; Bourjea, Jerome; Nikolic, Natacha.
Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) is a highly commercial fish species harvested in the world's Oceans. Identifying the potential links between populations is one of the key tools that can improve the current management across fisheries areas. In addition to characterising populations' contamination state, chemical compounds can help refine foraging areas, individual flows and populations' structure, especially when combined with other intrinsic biogeochemical (trophic) markers such as carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes. This study investigated the bioaccumulation of seven selected trace metals – chromium, nickel, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead – in the muscle of 443 albacore tunas, collected over two seasons and/or years in the...

Copper, zinc and lead isotope signatures of sediments from a mediterranean coastal bay impacted by naval activities and urban sources ArchiMer
Ferreira Araujo, Daniel; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Briant, Nicolas; Knoery, Joel; Bruzac, Sandrine; Sireau, Teddy; Brach-papa, Christophe.
Toulon bay is severely impacted by metal contamination induced by past and recent naval activities. In this work, Cu, Zn and Pb isotope compositions and elemental concentrations of fifty-five surface sediments were determined in order to map the spatial distribution of anthropogenic and natural sources along this land-sea continuum. Two sub-systems of Toulon Bay, the Small and Large bays, showed well-marked patterns on metal contamination levels and isotope signatures for Cu and Pb. The Small bay had the highest metal concentrations, and displayed average Pb and Cu isotope compositions of 1.1664 ± 0.0043 (1s, expressed as 206Pb/207Pb ratios) and −0.17 ± 0.19‰ (1s, expressed as δ65CuNIST values), respectively. It contrasted with the Large bay, with moderate...

Environmental stress in the pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas during gametogenesis : role of herbicides? ArchiMer
Burgeot, Thierry; Quirion, Sophie; Quiniou, Francoise; Knoery, Joel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Renault, Tristan; Osada, M.; Geret, F.; Communal, P. Y.; Jadas-hecart, A.; Gagne, F..
In the Atlantic French coast, significant mortalities were observed in oyster communities during gametogenesis. These deaths possibly result from the cumulative effects of various stressors such as seasonal temperature variations, pesticide application and the release of contaminants from the resuspension of sediments. A field survey, based on aquaculture conditions at 15 and 70 cm from the sediment bed with genetically-resistant (R) and -sensitive (S) lines, showed a stress condition. Significant weight loss was observed during May 14th through June 10th for both R and S lines. On one hand, the levels of the egg yolk vitellin in females were decreased at May 14th for both R and S lines. On the other hand, a significant increase in vitellin production was...

In 1995, a joint French‐Japanese cruise (ManusFlux) explored the Manus Spreading Center and some sites of the South Eastern Rift in the Manus Basin off the coast of Papua New Guinea (Figure 1) with the Japanese submersible [Auzende et al., 1996; Gamo et al., 1997]. In the framework of this joint project, called New STARMER, the French and Japanese teams completed the Manaute cruise with the R/V LAtalante and the Ifremer submersible Nautile in April and May 2000. The Manaute cruise explored and sampled volcanic and hydrothermal sites in the eastern part of Manus Basin and on the spreading axis of the Western Ridge (WR). The eastern part of the Manus Basin (Figure 2) was interpreted as a stretched‐back arc basin crust showing alternatively elongated ridges...

Heat, volume and chemical fluxes from submarine venting: A synthesis of results from the Rainbow hydrothermal field, 36 degrees N MAR ArchiMer
German, C. R.; Thurnherr, A. M.; Knoery, Joel; Charlou, Jean-luc; Jean-baptiste, P.; Edmonds, H. N..
High-temperature hydrothermal activity occurs in all ocean basins and along ridge crests of all spreading rates. While it has long been recognized that the fluxes associated with such venting are large, precise quantification of their impact on ocean biogeochemistry has proved elusive Here, we report a comprehensive study of heat, fluid and chemical fluxes from a single submarine hydrothermal field. To achieve this, we have exploited the integrating nature of the non-buoyant plume dispersing above the Rainbow hydrothermal field, a long-lived and tectonically hosted high-temperature vent site on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Our calculations yield heat and volume fluxes for high-temperature fluids exiting the seafloor of similar to 0.5 GW and 450 Ls(-1), together...

Insights from the spatial and temporal distributions of mercury species and isotopes in bivalves from the french coastline ArchiMer
Briant, Nicolas; Knoery, Joel; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Brach-papa, Christophe; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Savoye, Nicolas; Sonke, Jeroen.
Mercury cycles between atmosphere, terrestrial and aquatic reservoirs through a complex combination of transport and transformation processes, until it is buried in oceanic or terrestrial sediments. Monomethylmercury is the main species bioaccumulated and bioampli ed in the food chain. Knowledge of the origin (continental, oceanicorlocalsediment)ofthisspeciesforthelittoralenvironnment can still be improved. This study focuses on ~200 samples of bivalves (mussels: Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis and oysters: Crassostrea gigas and Isognomon alatus) from ~80 stations along the French coast. The goals of this study were i) to describe Hg levels, speciation and isotopic composition in various bioindicator bivalves from the French coastline, and ii)...
